The Adidas Design for the Atlas Lions

Terug naar het blog

It has been a week since we were eliminated by the well-playing and explosive Morocco. The fact that many players were trained and grew up in the Netherlands is one of the similarities with the Netherlands. A lesser-known similarity is in the area of shirts, because you wouldn't believe it, but Morocco, just like Oranje, played in the same Adidas model that we wore when we became European champions in 1988. The so-called Adidas Ipswich model was also used once by the Atlas Lions. This was in 1990 against Ireland. Apparently, back then in Morocco they weren't too fond of it either, and they only wore it once. Just like the Dutch version, it is therefore very rare and highly sought after. It is a red and white shirt with green trim — more colourful than ours. But back then it was far less successful than it is now, and we certainly felt that. Written by Jesse Rabbeljee.
