What is a match worn football shirt?

A match worn football shirt is a shirt that a player actually wore in an official match. So it's not a fan version from the shop, but the genuine player specification with the features of that match: the correct patches, the player size and often visible wear and wash marks. That is exactly what makes it unique: this one shirt really stood on the pitch.

Match-worn, match-issue or retail: what's the difference?

Not every special shirt is the same, and the terms are not interchangeable:

• Match-worn: actually worn in a match by the player. Shows wear and wash marks.
• Match-issue / player-issue: the player specification, prepared for a match, but not necessarily also worn. Same specifications as match-worn (patches, material, labels), only without the verifiable wear marks.
• Match-prepared: prepared for a match, differs from the shop version, but not worn.
• Retail / replica: the fan version sold in the fan shop at the time.

Why this matters: match-worn is the rarest and most sought after, match-issue comes close in terms of specification but lacks the 'worn' story. For every shirt we state exactly which type it is, and we never claim 'match-worn' when the provenance does not support it.

How do you spot a match-worn shirt?

You recognise a match-worn shirt by player-specific features, not by the label alone. Look for:

• Player size and cut: often a longer, roomier player fit; the warehouse version (match-issue) is sometimes prepared in sizes other than the player himself wore.
• Name and number application: professionally applied, matching that season's kit.
• Match patches and badges: competition or match-specific patches that weren't in the fan shop.
• Material and finish: often thinner, breathable fabric, sometimes ventilation holes; labels that differ from the retail version.
• Wear and wash marks: grass stains, light wear, wash wear, sometimes a sewn-in name label.

Provenance: how we handle it

Provenance is the origin of a shirt: the story and the evidence that links a shirt to a player, club or match. That can consist of a certificate (COA/LOA), photos in which the shirt can be matched, the source (club, auction, player) and match or competition details.

Here is how we do it at Kick & Rush:

• For each shirt we state what we do and don't know. If the player, match or season is established, we add it. If something is unknown, we say so honestly.
• An official certificate is often missing with this type of shirt. In that case we assess it on the features and details (size, patches, material, application, wear marks) and honestly describe why we estimate it as match-worn or match-issue.
• Is there a certificate (COA/LOA) or a reliable source? Then we state that explicitly.
• We never claim a provenance that is not established. We'd rather say honestly 'provenance not fully traceable' than tell a story we cannot support.

So for every shirt you know exactly where you stand: no empty authenticity promises, but an honest assessment by people who handle these shirts day in, day out.

Why is a match-worn shirt valuable and rare?

A match-worn shirt exists only once: this piece was worn by that player in that match and is never remade. The value depends on the player, the match or the season, and the rarity. Precisely because there is no second one and the provenance makes it special, these shirts are sought after by collectors. A match-issue of the same player is usually scarcer than retail, but less rare than a worn piece.

What does a match worn football shirt cost?

The price of a match-worn shirt depends on the player, the match, the rarity and how far the provenance is established. A shirt of an icon from a famous match is higher than a match-issue of a lesser-known player. The current price is shown with each shirt; signed and well-documented pieces sit at the top end. Because every shirt is unique and is never remade, you're buying a collector's item here, not a stock product.

Framed or signed as a showpiece or gift?

A plain match-worn shirt you can display yourself or have framed. Framed, you make it an interior piece straight away; we frame it professionally and deliver it to your home in person. Signed (with certificate of authenticity) adds the autograph as an extra layer: a real showpiece. Looking for a gift and unsure about the size? With a framed shirt or a gift voucher, size is no issue.

Delivery, showroom and returns

Order on a working day before 12:00 and your shirt ships the same day, with track & trace. Delivery time: usually 1-2 working days in the Netherlands, a little longer in Belgium and the rest of Europe. Framed shirts we deliver to your home in person. Prefer to see it first? Returns are possible within 14 days in original, unworn condition; return costs are at your own expense and signed and framed shirts are excluded from returns.
